He was sentenced to seven years in prison in February
Imran Khan (71 years) and his wife Bushra Khan were sentenced to seven years in prison a few days before Pakistan’s general elections in February 2024. According to a Reuters report, Imran Khan will remain in jail for now, as this week a court revoked his bail on charges of inciting riots by supporters in May 2023. While hearing the case, an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan had said that the actions of former Prime Minister Imran Khan were similar to those of a terrorist.
Bail was not granted in the case of inciting riots
According to a report in The Express Tribune newspaper, the court order said that Imran Khan not only incited the people but also instructed the leaders to create chaos and disrupt law and order to pressurize the army and the government for his release.
Imran Khan is currently behind bars because of several cases pending against him. In Islam, a woman cannot remarry before four months after divorce or the death of her husband. In Imran Khan’s case, his wife Bushra’s ex-husband Maneka had filed a petition in the court.
What was Imran Khan’s Iddat case?
Bushra Khan’s ex-husband had told the court that his wife (Bushra) divorced him on 25 September 2017 and married Imran Khan on 1 January 2018 without completing the waiting period of Iddat. The court had sentenced him in this case on 3 February 2024.
